SPRING BREAKUP - Kim Barlow and Mathias Kom
Friday, February 25, 2011
Spring Breakup is the lovely but unlikely marriage of Yukon singer/songwriter Kim Barlow and Mathias Kom, singer and songwriter for Ontario folk-orchestra The Burning Hell. With tongues only partially in their cheeks, this banjo and ukulele duo write pretty little folk songs about the inevitable end of love, laugh at their repeated mistakes, and sometimes even cry - when nobody is looking. Spring Breakup is a new band with very old hearts.
"Barlow's music pushes folk to the extreme. Highly innovative, she continually creates new sounds, meshing classical technique with roots and contemporary influences."
- CBC Radio 3
"Don't let Mathias Kom's doomy Leonard Cohen baritone, skeletal folk arrangements upon which he tends to hang his words fool you - this guy's actually pretty funny, veritably overflowing with black wit and cracked genius."
- Toronto Star
"Barlow is at her best when giving free reign to her marvelous imagination and hybrid approach to construction and phrasing. A fine vocalist with unmistakable traces of Joni Mitchell in her deliver, Barlow really shines as a lyricist."
- Goldmine Magazine
"A perfect balance of mirth and the morbid. Every song announces Kom as one of the finest new songwriters in Canada."
- Gueph Mercury
